Gaura Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in Romania and one of the most photogenic areas in Bucegi. For hikers with good physical training, such an endurance trail can bring extra satisfaction through the unparalleled views of Piatra Craiului and the western slope of the Bucegi Mountains.
The trail starts from Brasov-Campulung national road, from the intersection with the road to Poarta-Bran village. Walk through the village of Poarta (about 3.5 km) and enjoy the panoramic view of Rucar-Bran Pass and Piatra Craiului Mountains. After ½ hours reach "Oprisului Bridge" point, where you leave the road to Omu Peak via Clincea to the left and continue to the right, along Poarta brook, on the road between houses and hayfields. The landscape is dominated by the Transylvanian slope of the Bucegi Mountains.
Get to a new intersection (connection with trail 23 through Ciubotea Meadow) and climb on Muchia Izvoarelor edge on a road for articulated tractors and then on a path for 2-2 ½ hours to Mount Gaura. Get to the intersection with trail 24 (coming from Simon commune) and in 5 minutes reach Politei Saddle (1,623 m). From here walk up to Gaura Meadow, where there is a signpost (connection with trails 25 and 51). After a series of ups and downs, the trail takes you to the lower part of Gaura Valley with imposing rock walls.
Climb along the valley for 20 minutes and to the left you can see a red dot marker (130 m) that goes to Moara Dracului Waterfall (a 5 minute detour). The waterfall looks very nice from down below (unless the waterfall is dry due to the drought).
The marked path climbs on the left slope of the valley, past a spring, then it continues up on a section equipped with chains, and soon reaches the sheepfold and the shelter in the upper part of the valley. Here, the glacial cirque is truly grandiose. Continue the climb towards Hornurilor Saddle, from where you can see Malaiesti Hut, Scara Peak, Bucsoiu Mare Peak, Gaura Valley and other wonderful areas around the Bucegi Mountains. Soon get to Omu Chalet, the Weather Station and the Mountain Rescue Hut managed by Bran Mountain Rescue Service.
