The trails starts in Dubova, a village from Banat even if it is in Mehedinti County, at the southern foot of Almaj Mountains, in the area of the gorge of the River Danube. The gorge is located on the territory of Dubova commune, Cazanele Mici and Cazanele Mari being one of the most picturesque areas of Romania and Europe. Originally a mining town that was completely inaccessible to visitors during the communist time (due to its position at the border), today the commune experiences probably the best time in terms of tourism development. he trail starts in Valea Satului and takes you on forest roads, through bright meadows and places with vegetation that is typical for the protected area of the Iron Gates Natural Park. Once you reach the maximum height near Rariste peak (802 m), descend to Eibenthal. The village of Eibenthal was founded by Czech settlers and became a major coal mining center after 1840, when deposits of coal were discovered in the area and the first open galleries were opened. Today, Eibenthal is still a picturesque village but, like all mining towns, it faces an uncertain future. Descend from Eibenthal to the Danube and continue downstream to Dubova. Visit Ciucarul Mare with its impressive view over the Danube Gorge and the caves Gura Ponicovei and Veterani, places rich in history and of great value for speleologists.
