A short and relatively easy trail, without a big difference in elevation, trail 41 (red cross) links Babele Hut to the Heroes’ Cross and climbs towards Sugarilor Saddle. Those who dare and have the necessary training can climb Omu Peak further.
The red cross marking starts at the cable car station, below Babele Hut, and follows the road to Baba Mare Mountain Rescue Base and Costila Antenna Tower for 15 minutes. Leave the road to the right and follow the slightly upward contour line, over the exposed slopes, walk past two valleys and in 50 minutes reach the base of Caraiman Peak. Descend below the peak for 10 minutes to the platform with the Heroes’ Cross.
The cross is located in the saddle of Caraiman Massif, right on the edge of the steep slope facing Seaca Valley, at 2,291 m, being unique in the world both by the elevation where it is located and its size: the cross itself is 28 m tall and it has two 7 m arms. It was built between 1926 and 1928 to honor the memory of the heroes who died during the First World War.
From the Heroes’ Cross, climb to the west on the steep slope that leads you to Caraiman Peak (2,384 m), a plateau that can be reached with a four-wheel drive.
Descend westwards to Valea Alba Saddle (connection with the unmarked trail – Valea Alba) and on the west side of Mount Costila to reach the road that serves Costila Antenna Tower (the building whose tip is at the highest elevation in Romania: 2,558 m!)
Walk past Baba Costila and descend into Sugarilor Saddle (intersection with trail 37 - yellow stripe). To the left lies the long Sugarilor Valley and to the right Caldarilor Valley, with some great views.
