Directions

The trail starts from Bistra Muresului on DN 15 national road, at an elevation of 470 m, it climbs smoothly on Bistra Valley, first winding on a paved road through the village and then on a well-maintained forest road. After approx. 11 km there is a building that belongs to the Forest Administration on the left, then on the right you get to the intersection with trail 12 (yellow dot) and Stega Valley. After another few tens of meters, on the left side this time, reach the intersection with trail 11 (blue dot) and Cofu Valley. The trail continues along Valea de Mijloc Valley for another 7 km up through the forest, and after some steep switchbacks the road turns into a wild footpath that runs flat through a thick fir tree forest. Get to a new intersection with trail 11 (blue dot). From here, the two trails descend together for another 10 minutes to Cofu Meadow (1550 m).

Description

Trail 10 (Blue cross) is the trail crossing Bistra Valley to the eastern ridge road of the Calimani Mountains (trail 9 – yellow stripe), which connects with Bistriciorul Peak and then the main ridge trail (trail 1 – red stripe). This is a rather demanding trail due to its length and its climbs across a total elevation difference of approximately 1200 m alike. It is an approximately 7-8-hour hike. The trail is also (partially) accessible for cycle tourism.

The trail takes a left turn in a climb at the entrance from Reghin into Bistra Muresului, and then the scenery opens up as you notice the village and its beautiful church, as well as the mountains inviting you to explore these places with admiration. The paved road climbs smoothly, winding through the village, along Bistra Valley, which occasionally crosses the households, where people have built watermills and picturesque ‘natural washing machines’.

The pavements ends past the last lodging in the village, you reach a small camping site, preferred by locals and tourists, and then you continue along a forest road. Another this time more direct alternative route toward Scaunul Domnului Peak splits away to the right from this forest road (trail 16 – blue dot). Charmed by the scenery, you reach Stega Hut, then a forking, where, practically, the Bistra is formed by Cofu, Mijloc and Stega brooks (running from the left, middle and right, respectively). Each of them provides an alternative route to climb further toward the ridges.

The trail continues along Valea de Mijloc Valley for another 1 km, via a beautiful mixed and then spruce only forest, to reach the springs of Paraul de Mijloc Brook, where you cross a few rather steep serpentines. As you gain elevation, you have got a beautiful view toward Scaunul Domnului Peak, which invites you to rest. Once at Bistra Meadow, once more, you get to the intersection with the alternative route along Cofu Valley, which visits the beautiful Cofu Waterfall (trail 11 – blue dot), and you cross a shared section in a descent to reach Cofu Meadow, from where you can admire Bistriciorul Peak.
