The trail starts at Gura Apelor reservoir and shares its initial section with the blue dot trail climbing toward Peleaga Meadow and the blue cross trail climbing toward Zlata Peak. You follow the lake contour road to the east and pass the Retezat National Park access barrier, as well as the intersection with the blue cross trail climbing toward Zlata Peak. You cross the bridge over Lapusnicu Mare Valley and take the forest road to the right. If you continue on the road to the left, you follow the blue dot trail and reach Peleaga Meadow. You continue toward Lapusnicu Mic Valley on the lake contour road. Here, you cross the concrete-filled tube bridge. The red cross trail follows the contour road to the west, where you take the path to the left after 2.5 km, climbing onto Branu secondary ridge through a broadleaf forest, then a coniferous forest up to an elevation of 1700 m, where you come out of the forest and follow the path on the contour line. You continue through a thin coniferous forest, alternating between juniper bushes and small meadows, toward Branu (Gugu) Mountain Hut. From the mountain hut, the trail returns to the ridge through Branu Saddle, past Merila Mare Peak, and goes up on Gugu Peak (2,291 m), from where Lake Gugu can be seen to the left. The trail also offers views of Iapa Saddle in Tarcu Mountains, the Retezat and Borascu erosion platform area in Godeanu. Although it is not yet completed, the section between Gugu Peak and the end point of the trail coming from Iovan Lake will be marked this year.
